Haldimand Treaty of 1784 Anniversary

October 25, 2025

On October 25, 1784, Sir Frederick Haldimand, then Governor of Quebec, issued a decree granting a tract of land to the Haudenosaunee — also known as the Six Nations Confederacy — in recognition of their alliance with British forces during the American Revolution. This land, known as the Haldimand Tract, stretches along the Grand River from Lake Erie to its source, extending 10 kilometres on each side, and encompasses what is now the Kitchener-Waterloo region and beyond.

The Haldimand Tract remains at the heart of ongoing land rights and title discussions. While the original grant comprised approximately 950,000 acres, only about 48,000 acres remain under Six Nations control today. Centuries later, negotiations continue between the Six Nations Confederacy and the Canadian government over the title and stewardship of these lands.

This anniversary is more than a historical date — it is a living reminder of Indigenous sovereignty, resilience, and the responsibilities we all share to honour treaties and uphold justice.

🌿 Ways to Acknowledge the Day:

  • Learn about the history and contemporary realities of the Haldimand Tract.

  • Reflect on your own relationship to the land and whose territory you live on.

  • Support Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives connected to land reclamation and stewardship.

  • Share educational resources about the treaty and ongoing negotiations.
